Part of Rockwool

Rockfon is a subsidiary of Rockwool International, the world's largest producer of stone wool products. Rockfon ceilings are manufactured at Rockwool's factories in the Netherlands, France and Poland and distributed through sales companies all over the world.

The Production process

The base material of Rockfon ceiling products is stone wool (resin bonded mineral wool) produced according to the principles of a volcanic eruption. By means of patented technology, stone is melted and transformed into wool with binders being added. In the following processes, the wool is shaped and cut according to specification and turned into ceiling tiles of various sizes, thicknesses and densities. Finally, a finishing treatment is applied giving the tiles an elegant and attractive surface finish.

Rockfon develop intelligent ceiling solutions which actively address a number of important issues in modern buildings and renovation projects.Rockfon products are known for their design, aesthetics and ease of installation; coupled with the key performance features of superior fire resistance and acoustics. This ensures that our ceiling solutions are among the highest performing, most cost effective and time efficient in today’s interiors market. The comprehensive ceiling solution portfolio from Rockfon ensures that our customers are able to actively add value to the construction process, by ultimately creating superior interior environments. That is why we say “ACTIVATE YOUR CEILING”.

About Rockfon

ROCKFON is a leading supplier of stone wool ceiling and wall solutions. Discovered on Hawaii at the beginning of the 20th century, stone wool is a natural byproduct of volcanic activity, making it a renewable and plentiful resource.ROCKFON is a subsidiary of ROCKWOOL® International of Denmark – the world’s largest producer of stone wool - with over 75 years of experience. The ROCKWOOL Group was founded in 1937 and today operates 27 factories and employs more than 9,300 people across the globe.ROCKFON acoustic ceiling tiles are manufactured at four ROCKWOOL stone wool factories located in France, Poland, Russia and The Netherlands for distribution through sales companies all over the world.

Rockfon products have resin bonded mineral wool core and consists of at least %98 rockwool. With its patented technology, solid rock is melted and being converted to wool. Then the wools are cut with different shapes, sizes and densities and applied with a surface finish and finally turned into different .Rockfon products – being made from unadulterated resin bonded mineral wool – are between 40-80% lighter than traditional wet felted mineral fibre & gypsum ceiling tiles. Besides; this pure structure of the material makes Rockfon products unique in terms of 3 main properties:

Euroclass A1 Fire Resistance EN 13501-1
%100 Relative Humidity EN 13964
Excellent Acoustic Performance EN ISO 11654

As stone wool is non hygroscopic, the tiles withstand up to 100% relative humidity and maintain dimensional stability. The stone wool does not contain organic nutrients and so is not attacked by rot, fungi or bacteria. Thanks to Rockfon’s excellent humidity resistance and extremely low susceptibility to microorganisms, the brown stains those occurred because of bacteria pukes are never seen on Rockfon surface.

Acoustic Wall Panels

Acoustic correction is a necessary part of creating good indoor environmentsROCKFON provides excellent acoutstic propertiesStone wool is by nature a highly sound-absorbent material providing ROCKFON ceilings excellent acoustic properties. This allows you to achieve a high level of acoustical comfort without having to use ceilings with dimples, perforations or holes. The acoustical ratings of ROCKFON products have been tested in independent and certified laboratories. In schools, up to 70% of the consonants spoken by teachers cannot be heard by pupils(1)In hospital environments, noise control is very important to the recovery of patients as “unwanted sound” can increase heart rate, blood pressure and respiration rate(2)In offices, 70% of employees believe that their productivity would be higher if their environment was less noisy(3)In open plan offices, 60% of employees say that noise is the single most disturbing factor(4)

Two factors to determine the acoustics of a room

How much sound travels from one room to another.Sound insulation is the degree to which sound is prevented from penetrating another space. Sound insulation influences the sound level in the receiving space. ROCKFON stone wool ceilings can help limit the transmission of sounds from one room to another.

Improved sound insulation

All walls and ceilings, to some degree, limit sound transmission from one room to another. The use of building elements with superior sound insulation properties contributes to a higher degree of privacy and confidentiality.Sound insulation contributes to lower sound pressure levels in adjoining rooms, creating more comfortable environments in which everyone can easily concentrate.

How sound behaves in a room
When a sound wave hits a surface, part of the energy is reflected, the material absorbs part of it and the rest is transmitted. The quality of sound absorption is determined by the layout of the space and the materials used.By nature, stone wool offers excellent sound absorption properties.

It increases speech intelligibility making presentation and conversation easier to understand.

Proper sound absorption
Sound absorption controls the ambient sound pressure level in a room to create comfortable environments in which people can concentrate and work productively without noise-induced irritation or stress.

It reduces reverberation (echoes) and the ‘cocktail party’ effect where sound levels rise uncontrolled in a room as people talk louder and louder to make themselves heard until everyone is shouting.

Rockfon ceiling solutions contribute to the improvement of room acoustics as below: - Decrease the sound pressure level - Optimizes reverberation time in the room - Optimizes speech intelligibility - Improves the sound insulation performance The positive effect of the acoustic comfort in a room to human health is proved with scientific experiments. The most accurate acoustic environment Is set by not only one parameter but also considering a few factors together to achieve the optimum acoustic comfort: Sound pressure level: How high is the sound? Reverberation Time: What is the current reverberation time in the room? Speech Intelligibility:How well can the words be understood? Sound Insulation: How much the sound transmission between two adjacent rooms can be decreased?

What’s going on next door?
Total sound insulation is the ability of a room (partitions, ceiling, floor and all connections) to prevent sound from travelling through the air and through building elements.

The total sound insulation of adjacent spaces is expressed by DnT,w, R’w or DnT,A values. The higher the value (in dB), the better the performance. Mass, air-tightness and absorbing ability are the primary properties that determine the ability of a material to insulate against sound. Some regulators require a minimum of 35-45 dB between offices.Impact sound insulation between floors is the ability of a construction to insulate from impact noises such as footsteps. It is characterised by the impact sound pressure level L’nT,w in dB. The lower the value, the better the impact sound insulation. Regulators usually allow a maximum L’nT,w of 60 dB in classrooms and offices.

Can you hear me clearly?
Speech intelligibility measures how well speech can be heard and understood in a room. It is closely linked to reverberation time.

Many factors influence speech intelligibility. These include the strength of the speech signal, the direction of the source sound, the level of background noise, the reverberation time of the room and the shape of the room. The common way of expressing speech intelligibility is the Speech Transmission Index (STI) value on a scale from 0 to 1. In a class room, for example, the level should preferably be above 0.6. A simplified (faster) tool for speech intelligibility is the Rapid Speech Intelligibility Transmission Index (RASTI).

Is there an echo?
The most important factor in all regulations is reverberation time, which is defined as the time it takes for the sound pressure level to drop 60 dB below its original level.

In most cases, a low reverberation time improves the acoustical comfort. In some situations, however, such as concerts or conference halls, a higher reverberation time can improve listening comfort.
Reverberation time depends on the size and shape of the space along with the amount, quality and positioning of absorbing surfaces within the space. The more sound absorption in the room, the lower the reverberation time.

How loud is it?

Sound pressure level indicates how loud it is in the room. Exposure to continual high sound pressure levels or to high sound peaks can, over time, damage an individual’s health.Average sound pressure level is important for all environments – from factories to kindergartens. The European Union has defined maximum exposure levels at 85 dB(A), and in some countries, public events like concerts should not exceed 96 dB(A).The sound pressure level in a room depends on the strength of the sound source, the room shape and the number and quality of sound absorbing surfaces.

Acoustic comfort is set by two main factors:

How much sound travels from one space to another

Room-to-room sound insulation
The Dn,f,w value in dB quantifies the longitudinal sound insulation provided by the ceiling between two rooms. The higher the Dn,f,w value, the better the room-to-room sound insulation. The Dn,f,w value can be considered equal to the previously-used Dn,c,w value.Dn,f,w is used by acousticians to predict the total sound insulation DnT,w (R’w; DnT,A) between adjacent spaces.

Direct sound insulation

The direct sound insulation in dB indicated by the sound reduction index (Rw) measures the reduction of sound passing through the suspended ceiling. Ceilings with high sound reduction index Rw will help prevent noise generated by installations in the plenum from entering the room.

C & Ctr values
To rate the impact of sound insulation in specific conditions, laboratories report Dn,f,w or Rw indicating C and Ctr values. C is the adaptation term for “pink” noise such as speech, music, TV, children playing, etc. Ctr is the adaptation term for traffic noise. The lower the C and Ctr values, the better.
The influence of sound absorption on room-to-room sound insulation

The Sonar dB range have been designed to block sound from travelling from room to room, providing a unique combination of both outstanding sound insulation and sound absorption in one panel.
There is a strong synergy between sound absorption and the room-to-room sound insulation experienced in practice. This is not reflected by the Dn,f,w value measured in laboratories. At equal Dn,f,w value, the use of a highly sound-absorbent ceiling will result in a lower sound pressure level in the receiving room. The ceiling with the highest αw will do a better job of lowering the sound pressure in both the sending and the receiving room. The impact of sound absorption on the perceived sound pressure level can be calculated and has been verified through in-situ testing.

How sound behaves in a roomSound absorption is measured using the sound absorption coefficient alpha (α), which has a value between 0 and 1.00. Zero represents no absorption (total reflection), and 1.00 represents total absorption of the incident sound. This coefficient is used to determine the commonly used sound absorption indicators explained below:-Weighted sound absorption coefficient (αw)
Alpha W or αw is calculated in accordance with ISO 11654 using the practical sound absorption coefficient αp values at standard frequencies and comparing them with a reference curve. All suspended ceiling suppliers in Europe provide αw for their products.Stone wool used in ROCKFON products offers the highest performances compared to many other materials.

Equivalent sound absorption area (Aeq)The sound absorption property of islands and baffles is quantified using the equivalent sound absorption area Aeq expressed as m² per object. The Aeq value is measured in accordance with the ISO 354. This is the area of a fictive absorbing surface of αw = 1.00 which would absorb the same amount of sound as the tested island or baffle. There is no standardised “weighted” equivalent sound absorption area, so the best way to compare a plane ceiling with a ceiling of islands or baffles is to calculate the reverberation time for each room and situation.
ROCKFON islands and baffles provide high sound absorption where modular suspended ceilings are not suitable.

Absorption classes
αwSound absorption class
0.90 – 1.00A
0.80 – 0.85B
0.60 – 0.75C
0.30 – 0.55D
0.15 – 0.25E
0.00 – 0.10Not classified
The international standard ISO 11654 breaks absorption performance into five classes, from A to E. The αp values are compared to a series of fixed reference curves. The range between the reference curves is wide, so absorption classes provide only a rough indicator of sound absorption. Many ROCKFON ceilings offer class A sound absorption.
Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC)
Calculated in accordance with ASTM C423, the Noise Reduction Coefficient (NRC) provides a single-number rating for sound absorption (higher values are better). It is the mathematical average of the measured sound absorption coefficient αs at 250, 500, 1000 and 2000 Hz frequencies. NRC gives equal weighting across the frequency range, which means it is not as accurate as αw.

Your problems, our solutions !

We solve your acoustic problems. Meet Rockfon.

Noise is a main problem nowadays. Acoustic consultants advise certain products to solve these problems. Ceilings are the main parts for this solution. Additional sound absorbents are implemented to the designs for some complicated situations along with ceilings such as wall absorbers, insulated partition walls. Ideally, acoustic design should be done from the very beginning. However, sometimes unexpected acoustic problems may occur which can not be considered at the beginning. Additional sound absorbers or islands can be added to the project to the finished areas. But additional solutions are always more costly.

A edge
A edge tiles are a cost-effective solution that provides easy access to the installations hidden behind the ceiling. Tiles with an A edge are also the perfect complement to concealed and semi-concealed ceilings (e.g. when used as a perimeter trim). They can be mounted in grid systems with either T15 or T24 profiles. The grid system is less dominant with the narrower T15 profile.A edge tiles are demountable.

Light and shadow create a striking visual impactThe play of light and shadow has always been an important design element, often used to create visual impact or a special effect. By combining the shape of the ceiling tile edges with the width and colour of the suspension system, you can create eye-catching and distinctive designs that contribute to the overall architecture of a space.Edge option

E edge
E edge tiles are installed in a visible grid system which looks recessed, creating a shadow between the tiles. These tiles have a straight (S) or leaning (L) edge and can be mounted in a grid system of either T15 or T24 profiles. The grid system is less dominant when using a T15 grid.Ceiling tiles with E edges are demountable.

Minimalist and elegant

Concealed grid ceiling systems offer a minimalist and elegant appearance. They can be suspended, fastened directly or bonded with adhesive to the soffit. With no visible grid, even ceilings that contain services installations will appear uninterrupted.

D edge
Use D edge when you want an invisible grid but need to retain access to the ceiling void. For easy installation and removal, D edge tiles have C edges on two opposing sides and D edges on the others. They are fully demountable.

D Kenar
D kenar, taşıyıcıların görünmesinin istenmediği ve tavan arasındaki servis noktalarına, tesisata erişimin kolay olması gereken durumlarda kullanılır. D kenarlı paneller tamamen sökülebilirdir.

X edge
X edge tiles offer a near-monolithic appearance. They can be suspended on a T24 grid as an entire ceiling or as multi-module framed islands. They can also be direct-mounted to the soffit using X-hooks. Tiles of any size can be mixed and matched and are individually demountable.

With tiles ranging in size from 300mm wide to 2700mm long, ROCKFON ceilings provide extensive design freedom and flexibility.
